“Glory Days” of high school.
For many of the fans, its a chance to relive their “Glory
Days” for one night a year. The players, coaches, students
and alumni, who experience the County Clash, always carry
away great memories they will never forget.
It truly is one of the best high school football rivalries in this
great country.
Most Memorable County Clash.
A few fans tell their most
memorable moment in the rich
history of this great rivalry.
David Crompton
“My eyes have never seen anything like my
family’s first County Clash in 2003. It was our son
Jonathan’s first ever game against Pisgah and we
were excited to say the least. The afternoon before
the game, Doug McCracken called me about
3 p.m., telling me I needed to get to Weatherby
Stadium quickly. My wife Janet and I scurried
quickly, wondering what was so urgent for us to
be at the stadium four hours before kickoff.
“We arrived at 4:30 p.m. and I was stunned as I walked into the
stadium. It was sold out. Sold out at 4:30 p.m. three hours before
kickoff. At that moment, that’s when I became a little shaken
because my son was going to be at the center of this craziness. It
was my first experience in the rivalry and I will take it to the grave.
There is nothing like this game anywhere in America.”
Dennis Smathers
“My most memorable moment for me happened late in the 1988
season at Memorial Stadium. That’s when Pisgah ended Tuscola’s
10-game winning streak. It was a long decade of losses for the
Black Bears. Coach Carroll Wright’s team beat the Mountaineers,
19-0, in a driving rainstorm.
