Moxxie: Thank you so much for being here today with us. We have
heard so many wonderful things about you, and we are excited
to feature you as our “She’s Got Moxie,” story this month. I guess
I would like to start with the fact that you are a 20-year cancer
survivor this month. Can you share with us what that experience was
like for you?
Myra: Thank you so much for having me. I’m excited to be here too.
And yes, I’m a 20-year breast cancer survivor this month. It was a day
before I turned 33 that I was diagnosed, and if you don’t think that
doesn’t turn your world upside down, it does. But you do one of two
things: you either let the disease drive you, or you drive it. And with
the help of my husband, we decided to take the lead, and thank you
God, I’m still here.
Moxxie: That has got to be one of the hardest things to hear. One
of the scariest things to ever hear.
Myra: No doubt. And I learned a lot about myself. I learned that you
can’t give up. I learned that you must have hope, that you must fight,
and that you must stay driven and remain determined. And for this
purpose, it made me find my moxie. I’m very blessed that I’m still
here, and I don’t take life lightly.
Moxxie: What is a fear that you have that you haven’t
overcome yet?
Myra: Honestly, because of cancer and the experience and
becoming a survivor, I really don’t have any fears. I’m not afraid.
Moxxie: So, let’s go back pre-cancer. Let’s talk about how your
life is so different. Like, your perspective... I mean, having that
kind of diagnosis, you kind of had to re-birth yourself.
Myra: Oh, absolutely! What a great question. Because I was
diagnosed so young, I was only afraid of things like snakes. I hate
snakes. No matter what anybody says, there is no such thing as a
good snake. I’m scared to look at them on TV, in a book, anywhere.
But I didn’t have a lot of fears because I was so young. I’m not scared
to die. You face those things, you find that perseverance, you find
that grit that makes you keep going. And I’m not afraid. I live life and
love it, and I enjoy it. And I’m very grateful to be alive.
Moxxie: So, you had to dig down deep and find that grit, to find
your moxie. And that’s what makes you amazing. Clearly, you’ve had
some major challenges in your life. What was one challenge that
really stands out for you?
Myra: I think one of the biggest challenges that I’ve had was
relocating here to Haywood County. I’ve relocated a couple places
before, but here in North Carolina, I didn’t know anybody. I didn’t
know what we were going to do. When you uproot and just start
over and don’t have family or friends nearby anymore, you really
start over. That was a big challenge and one that I think that I
mastered well. I have a great group of friends here now. My
husband and I are very social people. We’ve made a beautiful
life for ourselves here.
Moxxie: Why did you choose Haywood County?
Myra: My husband had vacationed here when he was little. I had
never heard of Maggie Valley or Haywood County. Literally, I got
out a map and said, “Where are you talking about in this little area?”
So, in a nutshell I followed my husband, and I’m so happy I did. The
climate is beautiful, the mountains are peaceful. It’s a great place.
