Felicia: No, it wasn’t. Our girls are actually my nieces. They
have been in my life since they were born. It was only up until
recently that we became their legal parents.
Moxxie: Has there ever been a time where you and Hunter
were lying in bed, and said to yourselves, “What are we doing?”
Hunter: Oh, definitely. (laughs)
Felicia: Or, “Oh my God.” (laughs)
Hunter: But honestly, after adopting our girls, we decided to
become emergency foster parents too. And every placement
we have taken in, every child we have had at our home has been
amazing.
Felicia: There is this dialogue out there that suggests all these
children in foster care have a lot of issues. Our experience has
been very different. They have all been so wonderful.
Hunter: Yeah, really and truly, they are. They’ve all been great
kids. And, and you know, it’s just hard to see amazing kids go
through those types of situation.
Moxxie: Are you guys wanting to have your own
biological babies?
Felicia Wyman: No.
Moxxie: (laughs).
Hunter: (laughs) I think two’s good for us. And as long as we
continue doing foster care, we get to share the love with other
ones (laughs).
Moxxie: The best of both worlds, I suppose. Have you both
felt yourselves change within from this experience?
Felicia: Um, I mean, I’m sure I have. But I don’t really notice
it as much.
Hunter: I mean, I definitely have. I’m not as wild as I used to be.
Those nights are over. This parenting stuff really has a way of
grounding you.
Moxxie: Yes, those nights and mornings are over for you
two for awhile.
Hunter: So true. We were just a couple for so long, and we
used to wake up on a Saturday morning and drive to Charleston
just to eat oysters, and drive back that night (laughs).
Felicia: And those days are in the past for sure. (laughing)
Moxxie: Where do you see yourselves going forward? Would
you guys adopt another forever baby?
Felicia: I guess it just depends on the situation. It’s been hard
on us with the cases that we have taken in for emergency
fostering. We do connect with these children, even if they are
with us for just a weekend. It’s really hard to let them go.
Hunter: It’s very hard to let them go.
Felicia: But we also must think about it as, by letting them go,
it allows us to be able to help another family. It is hard, but
at the same time, we still impact them. They’re still going to
remember us. And we have the opportunity to touch their lives.
So, it can also be rewarding.
Moxxie: So, when you were going through the process of
becoming foster parents, how many other families were taking
the same classes as you to become the emergency foster
parent? cont. on pg 13
