STUDENT WELFARE AND WELLNESS

The Knox County School District is committed to providing a school environment that promotes and protects children's
health, well-being and ability to learn by providing better nutrition through the food services program and vending services. The
District works with schools to establish school health councils to serve as resources to schools by promoting further improvements
in the environment and the curriculum of the school in the areas of nutrition and physical activity.

The District is committed to the following:
• The District will engage students, parents, teachers, food service professionals, health professionals, and other
interested community members in developing, implementing, monitoring, and reviewing district-wide nutrition and
physical activity opportunities;
• All students in grades K-12 will have opportunities, support, and encouragement to be physically active on a regular
basis;
• Foods and beverages sold or served at school will meet the nutritional recommendations of the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for
Americans;
• Qualified child nutrition professionals will provide students with access to a variety of affordable, nutritional, and
appealing foods that meet the health and nutritional needs of students; will accommodate the religious, ethnic, and cultural
diversity of the student body in meal planning; and will provide clean, safe, and pleasant settings and adequate time for
students to eat;
• To the maximum extent practicable, all schools in the District will participate in available federal school meal programs
(including the School Breakfast Program, National School Lunch Program (including after-school snacks), Summer Food
Service Program, Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program, and Adult Care Food Program, including suppers); and
• Schools will provide nutrition education and physical education to foster lifelong habits of healthy eating and physical
activity, and will establish linkages between health education, school meal programs, and related community services.

Defense.
The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline provides free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS
Based on BOARD POLICIES 09.21 AND 9.211
In order for the Knox County Schools to be in compliance with Kentucky State Health Laws and Regulations, students must
have the following health records up-to-date:
1. Immunization certificate
2. Physical examination (K and 6th grade)
3. All students entering sixth grade must have a second MMR and a second physical examination.
4. Dental Exam (K)
According to Kentucky laws and regulations, no student is permitted to enroll unless all health records are up-to-date.
STUDENT/PARENT GRIEVANCES
Based on BOARD POLICY 09.4281
Any student/parent who wishes to express an educational concern or grievance shall observe the following order of appeal:
1. Teacher;
2. Principal;
3. School Council, where appropriate;
4. Superintendent;
5. Board.
