of buried treasure and pirate
ships continue to capture our
imagination.
• Feb. 10: History of African
Americans in Tampa
- Join us on a journey that traces
the history of Tampa’s Black
community. This story begins
with the first documented Moor,

descent from northwest Africa,
in Florida, through the Civil
War, as well as 100 years of Jim
Crow laws that enforced racial
segregation in the southern U.S.
Bear witness to the resilience and
entrepreneurship of the city’s
dynamic Black community and
the significant Central Avenue
business district they established.
• Mar. 10: The Amazing Bertha
Palmer - Bertha Palmer, born
1849, was a remarkably shrewd
and successful business owner
for her time. She broke many
barriers, including becoming
one of the largest landholders
and developers in Florida, a
philanthropist, and the only
woman member to represent the
U.S. at the 1900 Paris World’s
Fair.
• Apr. 14: Tin Can Tourists - In the
early years of the automobile,
thousands of people decided to
hit the road and head to Florida

explorers. Hear more about the
adventures of getting here and
the social life they enjoyed.
