Broadway At The Straz
Something For Everyone
T HE 2016-2017 SCHEDULE OF
Broadway shows at Tampa’s
Straz Center is a diverse
selection of Tony Award-winning
performances that showcase
the best there is to see from
Broadway. The season begins with The Curious Incident of the
Dog in the Night-Time from November 8th through the 13th. If the
title doesn’t hit you, it won five Tony Awards in 2015, including
one for “Best Play.” It follows 15-year-old Christopher in a most
unusual manner that pulls you into the plot. Next is Into the Woods
from November 29th to December 4th. This Tony Award-winning
classic musical by Sondheim and Lapine is a clever new version
of what wishes can do. Then, to end the year, from December
20th to the 25th is the new multi-Tony Award-winning musical
An American in Paris with music by George and Ira Gershwin.
The year 2017 will begin with Forbidden Broadway from January
10th to March 12th in the Jaeb Theatre, where a cabaret review
spoofs Broadway. The Tony Award-winning production of Cabaret
will bring the Kit Kat Klub and
Sally Bowles to you in pre-World
War II Germany from January
24th through the 29th. Then, from
March 7th to the 12th, you can see
Something Rotten!, where two
brothers write the first musical in 1595. It is hilarious, as it
parodies modern musicals. This will be followed by Rodgers
and Hammerstein’s The King and I, that won four Tony Awards
in 2015, including the “Best Revival of a Musical.” The final
show in the series is Finding Neverland from May 30th through
June 4th. The new hit reveals the story behind Playwright
J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan.
The Straz Center will also have a return of the Broadway
sensation Wicked from February 1st through the 26th of 2017.
Then, from July 11th through the 16th, they will stage Disney’s
The Little Mermaid and finish with a return of Motown the Musical,
the story of Barry Gordy from August 8th to the 13th. 9
