The Greek community of Tarpon Springs
began in 1905, when Greeks from
Dodecanese and Saronic Gulf Islands
moved there to work in the sponge
industry. The city grew, as sponges
served as its economic base. Within
eight years, more than half of the city’s
residents were Greek. Over the years,
much has changed; but the community
still has a strong Greek and maritime
heritage with a large population of
individuals of Greek descent. A book,
Images of America: Greeks in Tarpon Springs,
is published by Arcadia Publishing and
the History Press and is available at local
retailers, online bookstores, or from
Arcadia at www.arcadiapublishing.com or
(888) 313-2669.

Blueberry Festival
This year’s Festival celebrating Florida blueberries will be held in
downtown Brooksville in Hernando County on the weekend of April
16th and 17th. On Saturday, the Festival will be held for 12 hours from
10 am until 10 pm. On Sunday, festivities will begin at 10 am, but end
earlier at 4 pm. Fresh blueberries, of course, are the main draw; but there
will also be live music, arts, street entertainers, a wine bar and much more,
including a thousand-foot-long slip and slide from New Port Richey’s
Friendly Kia. For information, go to www.floridablueberryfestival.org.
