An Appraisal Buzz online survey
after the Las Vegas Valuation Expo
in October of 2019 revealed
interesting information about
independent contractors working for

about appraisal management
companies here – AMCs, of course,
utilize hundreds or thousands of
independent contractors on their
����������������������������������������������������������������������
��������������������������������������������������������
These were the focus of the survey.
The survey asked appraisers:
“Other than yourself, how many
W-2 employees does your appraisal
����������������������������������������������������������������
many 1099 contractors does your
��������������������������������������������������������������������
53% of appraisers responding to the
survey reported that they were sole
proprietors and had no employees
or contractors regularly working for
����������������������������������������������������������������������
most appraisers work for
themselves without employees or
����������������������������������������������������������������������
of appraisers reported that their
����������������������������������������������������
������������������������������������������������������������������
������������������������������������������������������������������������
more commonly utilized
independent contractors than
������������������������������������������������������������������
using contractors, while only 20%
reported having employees. This
points to the prevalent use of
independent contractors, as
opposed to employees, in the
overall appraisal profession, not just
in AMCs.
