PRINT IS DEAD
Long Live Print
By Aaron R. Fodiman
“The King is dead,
long live the King.”
I say these words to remind those who were sure that
magazines would become as out of date as buggy
whips, or should I say typewriters and camera film.
Like many other magazines, Tampa Bay Magazine is
thriving and growing.
You are obviously proof of this as you are now reading
magazine content. Therefore, despite your cell phone, tablet
and computer, you still find print relevant. We are what
is known as a niche or special interest publication, as our
readers are aware that what we cover is primarily about
the Tampa Bay area. However, that does not explain why
many individuals prefer the sensory experience of print
instead of digital. For me, the difference is easy to explain
– print is tangible. Our readers like the feel and look of
paper. They like the texture and how it feels in their hands
as they turn the pages.
Strangely, this gives magazine a sense of being real, that
our readers perceive as credibility. Perhaps you have heard
that Abraham Lincoln said, “The problem with quotes on
the internet is that it is difficult to verify their authenticity.”
On the other hand, Tampa Bay Magazine is relied on as a
trusted source of information.
Several recent scientific studies indicate that people
process information they read in print differently than
they process what appears onscreen. While reading print,
readers may be unencumbered by distractions, so that they
can better focus on what they are reading and give it their
full attention. All this leads to deep thinking, a capacity
that is difficult to achieve online, which is probably why
you are reading this. See, print is alive and well.
