10 YEARS AGO - March /April 2008
This was our last
swimsuit issue with a
live model on the cover.
The next year we used
a drawing and then in
1995, we ceased doing
swimsuit issues.
MARCH/APRIL 2018 | TAMPA BAY MAGAZINE 97
In this issue, we told the story
of how Henry B. Plant’s $3 million
Tampa Bay Hotel that was built
in 1891 became the home of the
University of Tampa. After the
hotel closed, the property was
acquired by the City of Tampa.
Then in 1933, when the hotel
seemed beyond repair, it became
home to the University of Tampa.
Since then, the university has
continued to grow and prosper
into the special center of learning
it is today.
Artist Steven Spathelf painted this original mural on the side of an office on
Dunedin’s Main Street. Steve created an old-fashioned-style postcard that used block
letters to spell the word Dunedin, and filled them in with notable local scenes. He
has just opened a new gallery for his work on Monroe Street just off U.S. Alternate
19 to the west of the Hog Island Fish Camp.
Peter Max, whose
style established him as
a pop icon, created this
cover for us.
The silver minarets of the University of Tampa
make a unique architectural statement about
the origins of the school.
