With a population of about 6,800, Aspen, Colorado sits
along the Roaring Fork River at almost 8,000 feet above
sea level. Named for the trees that abound there, Aspen
began as a mining camp in the 1880s during the Colorado
silver boom. When the silver market collapsed in 1893, the city began a
decline. By 1930, its population had decreased to less than a thousand.
