Alzheimer’s
By Megan Montemarano
Imagine a world where everything you ever knew and loved so dearly was gone – a once
vibrant mother, now struggling to recognize her own child, or a man who forgets where
he is headed and when asked for his name, can’t seem to find the words. The horrendous
effects of Alzheimer’s disease often leave both victims and their caregivers drowning in feelings
of helplessness and vulnerability. Nothing surrounds but a series of strangers, as victims become
foreign to both their loved ones and themselves, and caregivers desperately struggle to recognize
their cherished husband, wife, mother or father.
In an effort to alleviate some of this pressure, Alzheimer’s New Jersey was established to support
and provide local resources to the more than 600,000 people in New Jersey who are struggling
with the emotional and financial aspects of this disease. Formerly known as the Alzheimer’s
Association Greater New Jersey Chapter, the non-profit has been serving New Jersey since 1985.
