A Letter From
The Editorial Director
If you are anything like me, you had a list of things you wanted
to accomplish this summer. My list includes things like taking
my (gulp) nearly 2-year-old son to the beach; reading at least
six books; and getting back into a concrete exercise routine, among other
things.
How do you think that list went? Well, my son dipped his toes in the
Jersey Shore; I read at least four books (well, maybe we should only count
it as three – one of four was about potty training); and I found an exercise
routine that works for me – the mom, the wife and the editorial director.
Let me let you in on my little secret: FIT4MOM Bergen. Personally, my
son and I participate in their Stroller Strides class, a functional, total-body
conditioning 60-minute workout designed for moms with kids in tow. Yes,
I get my strength training, cardio and core restoration in, all while entertaining
my little one with songs, activities and fun. The best part: I don’t
experience “mom guilt.” Actually, the best part is really experiencing the
strength in motherhood firsthand. There’s no reason this organization
should be a secret any longer, so we’re highlighting it in The Strong Mom
Bod: FIT4MOM Brings All The Moms, Kids Together.
Another hidden gem in Bergen County: Beets Juice Bar. With two locations
in Park Ridge and Montvale, owner Jessica Piatt, 24, is making
healthy eating mainstream. From bowls to smoothies and juices, Piatt is
building her brand thanks to her innovative items, such as the Inflammation
Fix. Her story – Young Woman’s Passion For Healthy Food Transforms
Her Community – is the epitome of entrepreneurship.
While we’re on the topic of diets, let me ask you this: when’s the last
time you thought about your guts? There has been significant research to
suggest that our overall sense of well-being has a lot to do with the health
of our guts. Take control of your innards using the tips in Here’s To Your
Gut Health.
Exercise and eating right is beneficial to adults, but what’s beneficial to
our kids and teens? According to Omazing Yoga owner Lindsay Oppler, a
regular yoga and mindfulness practice can provide body confidence, calm
minds and help children navigate real life situations on their own. Read
more about starting a yoga practice with your children in The Benefits of
Yoga and Mindfulness for Kids and Teens.
Well, my summer to-do list may not have been completed (summer just
slips by so fast!), but I’ve already got a head start on my fall to-do list.
This issue is in your hands – check! On that note, I better go keep this momentum
going before fall slips away too.
See you around,
Jessica Humphrey-Cintineo
