You’ve spent over 20-30 years of your
life working, taking care of your family,
and prioritizing needs ahead of your own-
NOW is the time to focus on how you will
be taking care of yourself for the rest of
your life. The most common question that
is asked by individuals after they have
spent 20-30 years in the workforce is, “am
I ready to retire?”
The fears most people have
approaching their retirement, is not
knowing when they are ready to retire,
followed by the fear of running out of
money for the duration of their lives.
Retirement is the time of your life where
you truly begin to enjoy living, and it is
key to implement the necessary strategies
that preserve your nest egg leading in and
during retirement. A common term used in
the financial planning industry is called,
“The Retirement Redzone”. This addresses
major potential risks an individual faces
five years before retirement, or five years
after retirement. This is a period in between
the accumulation and distribution phase of
retirement, where assets and time increase
simultaneously.
The market is a factor that determines the
quality of your retirement life, depending
upon the choices a person has made in the
accumulation phase of their working years.
According to www.GoBankingRates.com,
16% of Americans have $300,000 or more in
retirement savings, but a staggering 42% of
Americans will retire broke. We are living
longer and longer these days, so financial
planning that ensures an individual has
sufficient funds to last throughout the rest
of his or her life, is vital.
According to the 26th annual retirement
confidence survey (RCS), only 21% of
workers are confident that they will
have enough money to live comfortably
throughout their lives, while 35% of
workers question if they will have enough
money for retirement. With statistics
like this, it makes it quite intimidating to
positively answer the question, “am I ready
to retire?”. Those who retired before the
2008/2009 economic crash, were shocked
when they watched their portfolios drop
20% and up to 50%. If they chose to retire,
they were taking withdrawals out of their
portfolio while it was in the process of being
recovered from the market’s collapse. As
of today, those investors were still unable
to regain from the impact the market had
on their investments, simply because they
miscalculated during a time of distress.
Take the right steps and work with a
professional, as to avoid or at least mitigate
these risks. A credible retirement planner
can help you answer questions like:
• “Am I ready to retire?”
• “Do I have enough money to retire?”
• “When should I take out my social
security benefits?”
• “How should my portfolio be
currently invested?”
• “How do I avoid outliving
my money?”
In today’s environment, we have
access to thousands of resources online
that can guide us, however most of this
advice is never fine-tailored towards an
individual’s specific needs. With all this
data and resources, it can create “analysis-
paralysis”, and hurt more rather than help,
when discussing the right time to retire.
