JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2019 | TAMPA BAY MAGAZINE 129
One hundred sixty films will be
shown at 10 different venues
throughout Dunedin when
the Dunedin Film Festival
debuts on January 11th, 12th and 13th.
The films have been culled from 1,400
submissions from 69 countries. This is
truly an international show that should
be another feather in the cultural cap that
Dunedin wears so well.
The timing is perfect, as the first few
weeks of January are generally lacking in
events, but on this weekend, there will be
excitement wherever you look from the
sounds of the world champion Dunedin
Pipe Band and Celtic music at the Scottish
American Society to the late night street
parties with dancing. There will be an allout
effort to demonstrate why the multibillion
dollar filmmaking industry should
have the support of the state of Florida.
The films fall into 30 diverse categories
and are primarily short presentations,
so it will be easy to view several before
moving to another location. Discussion
panels, lectures and opportunities to learn
about filmmaking and the people who
do it will be available. There will even be
a discussion on the place of celluloid in
today’s high-tech world.
The festival will end on Sunday evening
at the newly opened Fenway Hotel at a red
carpet awards gala that will be filled with
live entertainment. 9
