LYMPH DRAINAGE
ENHANCES BODY’S
HEALING
By Deborah Karlan, L.M.T.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage
can be used both preoperative
to prepare the tissue and
postoperative to relieve discomfort,
swelling and remove cellular debris
caused by the trauma of surgery.
Jackie came to me after she had a
tummy tuck and liposuction, concerned
that swelling would not allow her
wedding dress to fit. Within six sessions,
I was able to relieve her pain, swelling,
desensitize the scar and smooth out
lumpiness. She would still have to wear
her compression garment for several
months, but was able to wear her
wedding dress. Another patient, Marie,
had swelling in the legs and at the
surgery site because her lymph conduits
had been disrupted. Manual Lymph
Drainage effectively re-established the
proper lymph flow and eliminated her
swelling.
Lymph drainage is also effective after
back surgery and joint replacements.
The technique gently enhances the
body’s ability to heal without disrupting
the repair done in the surgery. Cosmetic
surgery and joint replacements normally
will produce swelling. Traumatized
tissues and scars can interrupt the lymph
flow and cause reduced healing, fibrosis
scar tissue, dimpling and uneven skin.
Poor lymph flow after surgery can cause
fluid pockets to develop.
Millions of surgeries are performed
each year. Manual Lymphatic Drainage
and massage can speed recovery and
improve the results.
