I will admit that I believe that politicians, like diapers, should be changed
often and for the same reasons. However, no matter how bitter the campaigns
become, I have learned that we will survive, and that everything will be all
right. The checks and balances of our political system will keep the ship
of state afloat until the next election, no matter which of the negatively
portrayed candidates happened to win. We will never know how bad or how
good things would have been if we had been able to choose the victors on our
own, without the interference of all the other voters, the polls and the mud
slinging. The truth is, as bad as it may appear at times, our democratic system
is far better than any others that have ever been devised.
The beauty of our system is that once our elected leaders take their place
in our government, we will all support them; and, likewise, they will only
do what is in the best interest of all. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little,
but you know what I mean. After all, the word “politics” is derived from the
ancient Greek word “poly,” which means many, and “ticks,” those small,
blood-sucking insects.
We are also fortunate to live in America and to be a part of the finest
country the world has ever seen. So, next time you hear something negative
about our country or our leaders, just refuse to listen. Negativity, like the
tango, takes two. One person spouting off is totally useless if no one is
listening. It is like the tree in the forest that supposedly makes no noise as it
falls, if no one is there to hear it. I knew a man once who read so much about
the health hazards of smoking that he quit “cold turkey.” He refused to ever
read about the dangers of smoking again.
I refuse to allow the views of others to upset me or worry me. Be they right
or wrong, it doesn’t matter, as I am assured that everything will turn out fine,
no matter what. I will survive; I will prosper; I will know joy and happiness;
and all will be well. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt once warned us that
we had “nothing to fear but fear itself.” And, since then, nothing has changed,
as we still have nothing to fear but fear itself. FDR said those words as the
country was recovering slowly from its worst economic depression, while our
troops were fighting on foreign shores, and everyone was concerned about
what would happen to America. What happened then, and what will happen
again, is that our country has grown and will grow stronger, healthier, and
better as we advance through the years. Fortunately, those who are elected to
leadership have never turned out to be the vile individuals we were told they
were before they were elected.
Long live the republic of the United States, its citizens, and even our elected
officials. They can’t be as bad as their opponents made them sound.
I’m not myself today and everybody has noticed the improvement 1
