This Still Life of Roses by Osias Beert over the chest of drawers from the Museum of Fine Arts’ collection
contains only summer roses, which may have originated in Persia, while two paintings of flowers by Flemish
painter Nicolaes van Verendael flank it the way you might see paintings displayed in a home. The lush bouquets
in the paintings from the Grasset Collection are brightly lit to stand out from their dark backgrounds.

been hung in the Museum of Fine
Arts to invite viewers to see them
as if they were in a private home.
The paintings are relatively small
works that invite you to move in
closer to see the details so as to fully
appreciate each artist’s expertise of
technique. They are indeed “A Feast
for the Eyes.” 9
