DON’T RETIRE…REWIRE™ - PART II
In our previous DON’T RETIRE…REWIRE™ article in the
March/April edition, we primarily focused on the financial side of
retirement by stressing the need for a written financial/retirement
plan. Knowing your resources and deploying them properly will
help make retirement a more enjoyable next phase of your life.
But there is more to retirement than just finances.
Planning for retirement can be a job in and of itself and it can be
exhausting. Retirement is not for the faint of heart and it should
not be taken lightly as it can be a huge adjustment. For most of
your life before retirement you were told when, where and how
you would do things. You were busy in school, college or trade
school, work, raising a family, work, educating the children, work,
taking care of parents, work, etc. Now you wake up one morning
and you have nowhere to go. So what do you do?
Just about anything you want. The possibilities are endless so put
your imagination to work. Here are our Top Ten Things to Consider:
1.) Make up for lost time – Spend time with your spouse/
significant other, family, friends, neighbors and anyone else that
you like or want to get to know better.
2.) Travel – Go back to that favorite place you have talked
about since you were there the last time. Head to the place you
always wanted to see but haven’t yet. Buy a motorhome or boat
if you fancy those.
3.) New home – Maybe it is time to downsize. Move to the
country. Move to the city. Maybe a second home.
4. ) Go to school/teach – Many states like Florida have special
programs that allow seniors to audit courses at public universities.
Study what you want not what is required. Learn a new language.
Share your knowledge with others by becoming a teacher/adjunct
professor.
5.) Develop/Start a hobby – President George W. Bush has
become a prolific and accomplished painter in retirement.

Photography, stamp/coin collecting, gardening/farming, fishing,
hunting, learning to play an instrument and creating your own
wine/beer are just a few that come to mind.
6.) Read/Write a book – Whether for fun or learning, reading/
writing is a great way to expand the mind and to keep it active.
Join others to discuss the books you have read.
7.) Volunteer – There are so many not-for-profit organizations
from which to choose and they all need your help with time,
talent, and treasure. Only work with those where you have a
passion around their mission. Become a mentor to students,
young professionals, or business owners.
8.) Go back to work – maybe you can work part time which still
gives you lots of time for fun. Work at something different than
your previous profession. Hopefully the money isn’t important, so
do not get hung up over the pay. Be a consultant, public speaker,
become a public servant/politician.
9.) Join social organizations – How about your place of worship;
can they use you? Maybe a country club, fitness club, bridge club,
chess club, book club, or any place that lets you socialize with others.
10.) Take it slow/easy – while there is a tendency to fill up all that
free time, there is nothing wrong with doing nothing. Relaxing is
good for your long term health. Maybe try yoga or tai chi.
Over the years we have worked with thousands of folks just
like you. Sure as financial planners we are going to help with the
financial aspects, but we have learned that there are many who
have lots of money, but still have a lousy retirement. Why? They
simply could not make the transition from full time employment
to full time enjoyment.
