winter
Looking to beat the WINTER blahs? Come
experience theater, dining, shopping and holiday
celebrations in unique downtown centers. Plan a
girlfriends’ getaway for a spa and yoga weekend
to just relax and breathe. Dropping temperatures
don’t mean you can’t enjoy the great outdoors!
Beat your cabin fever and check out opportunities
to stay active this winter. Bring the family for a day
of skating at Roosevelt Park’s outdoor rink. Winter
hiking offers new perspectives on Middlesex County
landscapes—follow red-fox tracks in fresh fallen
snow, search for day-roosting owls among snowcovered
pine trees or just enjoy the tranquility of a
bright winter morning.
spring
Come SPRING, you’ll find St. Patrick’s Day parades, film festivals
and a calendar full of top-name performers and electrifying plays.
Stroll through scenic Donaldson Park in Highland Park when
cherry blossoms are at their peak. Catch the Middlesex County
History Day & Antiques Show at East Jersey Old Town Village or
the New Jersey Folk Festival at Rutgers Day, the state university’s
annual cross-campus celebration of everything RU. Come out
and dance at April’s Hub City Music Festival at venues throughout
New Brunswick.
SUMMER brings street fairs, concert series and
plays in the park. Did you know that the first
official Independence Day celebration took place
on the banks of the Raritan River? Middlesex
County celebrates its storied past in our country’s
independence with Fourth of July excitement in New
Brunswick, Piscataway and throughout the county with
fireworks, reenactments, boat parades on the Raritan
Bay and so much more. Take in a Liberty Base Ball
Club game, played according to the rules and customs
of the 1850s. Experience Salt Water Day on the Old
Bridge waterfront, an event that traces its history back
to the Lenni Lenape, the area’s original inhabitants.
Just as the FALL foliage is starting to blaze with color,
Middlesex County’s vibrant arts scene is heating up.
Fall is the perfect time to enjoy winery tours, corn
mazes, bike rides, hikes and fall festivals. Bring the
kids pumpkin or apple picking and throw in a stop at
a hands-on museum, historic site or environmental
center for an American History lesson in farming and
a maritime region that was bustling well before the
American Revolution. Scare yourselves silly at any
number of out-of-the-ordinary Halloween festivities.
