In colonial times, the Township of South Amboy
encompassed the entire area along Raritan
Bay within Middlesex County. In 1869, a portion
separated and became Madison Township,
named in honor of President James Madison.
It proved to be a thriving rural community with
agriculture and clay mining among its principal
industries. Access to Raritan Bay and steamboats
provided a means to transport produce, lumber
and other goods. With the introduction of the
railroad in the mid-19th century, commerce and
population increased.
In the first quarter of the 20th century, the portion
of the township known as Laurence Harbor
became a popular summer destination. A resort
area sprang up with restaurants, a country club,
amusements and beaches, attracting even more
people to the area. In 1975 Madison Township
was officially renamed Old Bridge, in recognition
of the oldest bridge built to span the adjacent
South River.
There’s always something fun and exciting to
do in Old Bridge Township. It’s home to many
sporting associations, with basketball and soccer
leagues, three youth recreational football teams,
cheerleading and 16 divisions of baseball and
softball. The John Piccolo Ice Arena at Old
Bridge Township Municipal Complex is home
to the Junior Knights Youth Hockey League.
Lacrosse is played on newly renovated fields at
Geick Park. The Parks & Recreation department
offers programs and activities for all ages, from
Mommy and Me to seniors.
Operation Beachhead provides recreational
activities to disabled veterans, active duty military
personnel and their families, and children with
special needs, serving more than 200 veterans
and their families throughout the year.
