THE PROPRIETARY HOUSE
Proprietary House Association
149 Kearny Ave., Perth Amboy, 732-826-5527
www.theproprietaryhouse.org
The Proprietary House, completed in 1764, is the only remaining official
royal governor’s mansion still standing in the original 13 colonies. The house
was nearly destroyed by fire in the 1780s and had to be extensively repaired
and renovated. It was later used as a stylish hotel and a private home.
Delve into the juicy Proprietary House history, from the story of Royal
Governor William Franklin, the illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin, and his
relationship with his father; how it was occupied by both Patriot and British
forces and that it served as headquarters for both American General Hugh
Mercer and British General Sir William Howe. The nonprofit Proprietary
House Association offers guided tours, lectures, concerts, storytelling, ghost
tours and teas. Overlooking Raritan Bay, the museum’s beautiful spaces are
available for rent for special occasions such as weddings, dinners, meetings
and luncheons.
BUCCLEUCH MANSION

NOTE: Buccleuch Mansion has recently been under restoration and will
reopen for tours on July 4, 2019.
One of New Brunswick’s oldest historic landmarks, the 18th-century
Buccleuch Mansion (pronounced “buck-clue” or “buckloo”), originally a
Georgian-style residence with 12 rooms and a separate kitchen building,
has been influenced by Federal, Italianate and Greek Revival renovations
over the years. The hallway interior is notable for its colorful hand-painted
DuFour of Macon wallpaper featuring familiar monuments of Paris. The
home contains a remarkable collection of American decorative arts,
furnishings, textiles and numerous other objects that span the almost
two centuries (1739–1911) that it was used as a private home to several
notable New Brunswick families.
In 1911, the house was deeded to the city of New Brunswick, along with
79 acres of parkland, by its last occupant and owner, Anthony Dey. The
mansion’s contents and furnishings were entrusted to the Jersey Blue
Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, who
maintain this rich historical resource and assist visitors in understanding
the history of the house and its occupants. The mansion and Buccleuch
Park are maintained by the city of New Brunswick.
