Metuchen has a rich history as a place where innovative, creative and artistic
people gather. Today’s residents work in management, business, science and
the arts, and over 60% hold college degrees.
Metuchen’s downtown is the historic heart of this central New Jersey community. Anchored by the 13th busiest train
station in New Jersey, a recent “Transit Village” designation and an over $100 million investment have made Metuchen
one of the top downtowns in New Jersey. Since 2016 over 100 new businesses, including Whole Foods Market, have
opened and expanded in this borough that is fully surrounded by the township of Edison. That’s why it’s no surprise the
New York Times called Metuchen a “doughnut hole with a storied past and new development.”
The Middlesex Greenway is a beautiful open-space resource within the communities of Metuchen, Edison and
Woodbridge. The 42 acres of land along a historic portion of Lehigh Valley rail corridor were purchased by Middlesex in
2002 as a rails-to-trails project, providing a 10-foot wide paved trail suitable for walking, biking and jogging, with several
fully accessible entrances along its 3.5 miles.
In 2018 the Borough of Metuchen announced plans to purchase and restore the Forum Theater. This 450-seat theater,
built in 1928, will become an exciting new venue for music, theater and events.
