receiving device to do any error checking. This can result
in lost packets, causing video and audio dropouts. It is
also more difficult to multicast across multiple networks,
switches, and routers because all of these must be properly
configured for multicasting, and not all routers or ISPs
support multicasting.
Wireless AV Transmission
With the proliferation of mobile devices, as well as the fact
that some locations are difficult to support with traditional
wired infrastructure, wireless AV presentation systems offer
a viable option. Typically comprised of a gateway device
connected to the data network, the systems allow users
to share content utilizing existing Wi-Fi access points.
Whether through an app or native capability, such as
Airplay, users can mirror the content on their device to
the AV system. While wireless offers some exciting AV
presentation capabilities, it is important to note that
performance will vary depending on Wi-Fi coverage,
processing power and platform selected; it is not quite
at the quality or reliability level of wired transmission.
CONCLUSION
AV transmission over shielded twisted-pair Category cable
and Ethernet infrastructure has many advantages and is
becoming commonplace. ICT professionals with insight
into the basic workings of AV over network infrastructure
are empowered as IT and AV increasingly share the same
networks and infrastructure. ICT professionals and AV
designers and installers must share knowledge and work
as a synergistic team to deliver solutions that meet and
exceed client expectations. This creates new business
opportunities for all.
