WHAT IS AI?
is unstructured or unlabeled.
Definitions of AI, machine learning,
and deep learning from Merriam
Webster include:
Artificial Intelligence
• A branch of computer
The term, machine learning,
is sometimes used interchangeably
with AI; it should not be (Figure 1).
Machine learning is one of the com-
ponents that makes up AI when ma-
chines (computers) carry out tasks
based on algorithms in an intelligent
manner; that is AI. Deep learning is
even a further subset of AI (below
machine learning). With the understanding
that machine learning and
deep learning are subsets of AI,
a common use case involves traffic
information and specifically the
routing of transportation. Whether
commuters know it or not, smartphones
are constantly collecting data
on location and movement of traffic
mostly through apps, such as Google
Maps, Waze, Apple Maps or any appli-
cation that is tracking location. The
ability for a smartphone to direct
drivers to the most efficient routes
from origination to destination re-
quires AI. The amount of data that
is constantly collected and quickly
analyzed by servers is unimaginable,
and it is occurring all the time. This
is one example of why there has been
a massive surge in data center construction
and the steady need for
ICT professionals to design and
install them.

science dealing with the
simulation of intelligent
behavior in computers.
• The capability of a machine
to imitate intelligent
human behavior.
Machine Learning
• The process by which
a computer can improve
its own performance
(as in analyzing image
files) by continuously
incorporating new data
into a statistical model.
Deep Learning
• A subset of machine learning
in AI that has networks
capable of learning
ICT professionals will need to focus on quite
a few areas of design when incorporating
the AV infrastructure to support AI.
