can be a solution for
EMI in LANs but only
at higher frequencies.
CONCLUSION
While the subject of EMI can be very confusing and
difficult to understand, there are simple and practical
solutions to mitigate its impact on wireline LANs and
ensure a very reliable and high QoE, especially when
critical video streaming applications are utilized.
This can be accomplished without the additional
expense of placing optical fiber cables. For electrical pro-
tection and lower-frequency EMI issues, the installation
of an INT should be considered, especially on longer
circuits, LAN circuits for video streaming and other
critical computer networking applications, and those
OSP cables interconnecting buildings where GPR conditions
are suspected. When a more suitable INT design
is available for LANs, it is possible that it will also be
effective in suppressing the higher-frequency AXT issue.
Any new installations should seriously consider using
STP and a tighter twisted pair, such as Cat 6A. Anything
higher than that is already shielded and would be
effective in mitigating AXT. An INT would still be
required in handling GPR issues on OSP cables and
many surge protection problems that traditional surge
protectors cannot adequately resolve.
