The Lord said to him, “Who gave human beings their
mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them
sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I
will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” Exodus
4:11-12 NIV
What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail? We ask this question and
come up with many answers, but how many of us can come up with more excuses when
God asks us? More times than not, I’ve given God all my reasons why I can’t do
something before even asking Him how He plans to help me do it. I limit myself and
God’s power before I can even take the first step. What about you, can you relate?
Moses, like all of us, did not fall short of excuses. Excuses that do nothing except set us
on the path of disobedience and the lackluster lives that we settle for when we choose
to tell God no.
How do we break free from the lies of “I can’t, I don’t know how, I don’t believe I am
enough, it failed before,” or my favorite, “I won’t until I can do it perfectly”? We have
to make the switch in our minds and start watering the seeds of faith that will break
the shell of doubt and blossom into the words, “I know who can.”
If God wanted something to be flawless, I believe that He would do it Himself.
Instead, He invites us to be a part of His mission of spreading the hope of Jesus Christ
and leading others to Him. He wants us, broken vessels, to go out and preach, teach,
heal, deliver, serve, and love those around us. All the excuses are small cracks in our
earthen vessels to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. That
was the hope for Moses, and that is the hope for us.
Believe what God is whispering to you. The unique passions He’s put in your heart, the
gift you don’t feel worthy of having, and the calling you don’t feel worthy to live are
all waiting on you to stop making excuses. Success for the kingdom is measured by
obedience. Believe that God wants to tell the story with and through you, so give Him
a different answer this time because He’s heard it all before.

What is something that you would love to do with God but you’re
struggling to believe you can?
What’s one excuse you can stop using today?
