A VICTORIAN COLOR PALETTE
When setting the task to choose a color
palette for our fabrics and threads, we
wanted to stay as authentic to the
Victorian aesthetic as possible. The
Christmas themed color schemes of bright
reds and greens we see in magazines,
advertisements, and when we go out
aren’t quite the same as they were in the
Victorian era. Instead, the Victorians opted
for a much more muted, dark, and toned
down color palette, using deep burgundy
and maroon tones, creamy ivory shades
and glints of gold, silver and bronze.
If you take a look at our tile scenes, you can
see those colors reflected in the various
appliqués throughout, as well as the threads
used to stitch in the delicate details. Since
each block features realistic stitching to
paint the scenes in stitches, you’ll want to
select a range of shades for each color
you choose. Our burgundy thread colors
are supplemented with lighter shades
of red, while our navy tones are paired
with lighter blues to shade and highlight
different parts of the same subjects.
When selecting your fabrics, you can
choose various shades of cotton for
you appliqués in each block, but keep
in mind that your fabric texture can also
be used to channel the Victorian period
into your tile scenes. Fabrics such as
velvet, silk, linen, as well as cotton, were
extremely prominent in the fashion and
home decor of the period. To give each
of your tile scenes a truly Victorian feel,
play around with different types of fabric
textures as you make each come to life.
