Good food and drink are plentiful on the Key. You
Big Lagoon State Park
can check out The Jellyfish Bar for awesome sushi,
Hub Stacey’s for good grub and drinks at local prices,
Lillian’s for homegrown pizza, Fisherman’s Corner for its
funky atmosphere but excellent seafood, the Crab Trap
for overall great seafood and beachfront view, Shrimp
Basket for all things perfectly fried (they have broiled and
baked too), the Oyster Bar for tasty, upscale waterfront
dining and the down home goodness at the The Point
Restaurant (try the fried mullet backbones), where
local band Bubba and Them have played for decades.
Also high on the list is the Perdido Key Sports Bar and
Restaurant, and for the best sunsets on the island, go to
the aptly named Sunset Grill. It’s a favorite for locals and
visitors alike.
Check out Perdido Bay Seafood on
the Intracoastal Waterway “under
the bridge” to pick up fresh scamp,
snapper, grouper, tuna, shrimp and
their tasty brethren that literally
comes right off the boats. Plenty of
local restaurants will serve up the
same delightful fare if dining out is
more your style.
Catch of the Day
Speaking of fish, for hard-core or casual fishing
types, the expansive grass beds along the
shoreline (especially adjacent to the parks)
are full of speckled trout, redfish and mullet.
Best to check with local bait and tackle shops
or fishing guides for where to go and what to
use depending on the season. The same is true
with nearshore fishing for Spanish mackerel,
bluefish, pompano and redfish. Getting skunked
or actually catching something depends on the
season and the bait (and the delicate touch of
the fisher person). Offshore you’ll find snapper,
grouper, amberjack, mahi-mahi, king mackerel
and jack crevalle and witness monster turtles
and dolphins frolicking in the deep blue sea.
A litany of charter boats big and small can
put you on fish inshore or offshore. If you’re in
for a truly unique fishing adventure, you can
do an overnight 60 to 100 miles out for tuna,
swordfish and other pelagic species.
As with any prolific fishery, ours is regulated
by season and bag limit, so be sure to buy a
fishing license and follow the guidelines or
you could be the one getting caught.
