EXPLORE LOCAL HISTORY
Historic Pensacola Village
IF YOU THINK A VISIT TO PENSACOLA OR
PERDIDO KEY IS ONLY ABOUT THE BEACH,
THINK AGAIN!
Every day, 460 years of history come to
life through museums, architecture, tours and
monuments preserving the rich heritage of
the City of Five Flags. Visitors can experience
the city from its earliest days as America’s
first multi-year settlement.
The T.T. Wentworth, Jr. Florida State
Museum in Downtown Pensacola is a good
place to start. Here, you can see an anchor
from one of the 16th-century ships used
by Don Tristán de Luna y Arellano in his
voyage to Pensacola in 1559. Another exhibit
showcases an eclectic mix of artifacts from
Trader Jon’s, a downtown bar frequented by
naval aviators from the 1950s through the
early 2000s.
Eleven of 27 historic homes and buildings
in Historic Pensacola Village are open for
tours, including Old Christ Church, the oldest
church in Florida still standing at its original
site. Artifacts and photographs are displayed
throughout the buildings, and living history
exhibits are offered periodically.
Take a walk, shop, or dine around the
area known as Plaza Ferdinand, where Gen.
Andrew Jackson accepted the territory of
West Florida from Spain in 1821 and first raised
the U.S. flag in Pensacola. Several blocks to the
north and west, the historic Belmont-DeVilliers
neighborhood has been revitalized, preserving
an area noted for its food and jazz, blues and
gospel music during the early 20th century.
Military history buffs will enjoy visiting
Naval Air Station Pensacola, where you can
tour Fort Barrancas and see 150 years of
military aircraft displayed at the National
Naval Aviation Museum.
