JERSEY
SHORE
NOSTALGIA
Ocean County Cultural
Heritage & History
A song on the radio. A cup of boardwalk fries.
The scent of sunscreen wafting on the warm
ocean breezes. The tantalizing taste of a grilled
hot dog or a cool and refreshing soft-serve ice
cream. What triggers your “Down the shore”
memories?
There are several locations throughout Ocean
County where you can revisit our rich history
and indulge those memories. Museums,
societies and institutions throughout the region
highlight our maritime heritage, transportation,
development of the area and the birth of the
nation. Come visit the record of all that has gone
into creating Ocean County’s Jersey Shore.

Located at the north end of Long Beach Island, Viking Village was
founded by a group of Scandinavian fishermen in the 1920s. Home
to 45 fishing boats, Viking Village runs free dock tours every Friday

first-hand about the commercial fishing industry. The one-hour tour
includes fish tales about the history of Viking Village, the scoop on
scalloping, the ins and outs of long-liners, which haul in tuna, Mahi
and swordfish, and the challenges of clam and oyster harvesting.
