Kinetic Ring by Catherine Woods is the result of a successful public and private partnership.
Alliance and the Westshore residential neighborhood
improvement Committee, while the remaining $51,000 came
from the City of tampa through its Arts Programs Division
under the leadership of Mayor Bob Buckhorn. the sculpture
was one of ten major works of art that were added to tampa’s
art collection in 2012, and placed throughout the city for our
enjoyment and cultural enhancement.
other art pieces that were added to the City’s art collection
in 2012 include Tampa Postcard, a mural on Florida Avenue
by Carl Cowden, iii; Pedestrian Bridge relief sculptures by
Bill Culbertson; and Fossils relief sculptures in the Joe Chillura
Courthouse Square by Charles Fager and Joan Marmarellis.
that was also the year that tampa commissioned light art
by building architect BeCk at the USF CAMlS building, as
well as by tracey Dear at the Brorein Street Bridge, CSX
Bridge, kennedy Boulevard Bridge, Platt Street Bridge and
on the expressway Authority overpass.

As the artist explains, “Westshore is an area on the move
with its lively collection of restaurants, shopping areas and
hotels. i wanted Kinetic Ring to reflect that activity – to be bold
and to have a sense of movement.” Woods more than fulfilled
her hopes for Kenetic Ring. the weatherproof sculpture seems
to visually reflect the colorfulness, vitality and boldness of its
bustling, ever-changing surroundings.
Kenetic Ring, which the artist confessed is her favorite
creation so far, represents a new direction in her work. Her
use of flat architectural glass panels that function as durable
modular building materials allows her to create a dynamic
three-dimensional form. the overlapping transparent glass
imparts an “intriguing, glowing lightness to the sculpture,”
as she puts it, that metal and other materials would not
achieve.
Woods’ sculpture, which was installed and dedicated in
December, 2012, serves as a welcoming gateway into tampa
for visitors and residents traveling to and from the Howard
Frankland Bridge, tampa international Airport and other
locations.
Kenetic Ring is a shining example of how the private sector
and the government can work together for the betterment of the
community as a whole. the piece was commissioned by
Westshore Alliance and the City of tampa Arts Program
Division. individual citizens and businesses donated $44,000
of the sculpture’s total cost of $95,000 through the Westshore
tampa is aglow with outdoor art.
