Ask Margaret
by Margaret Word Burnside
I’ve been sending and receiving postcards since your
article in the May/June, 2017 Tampa Bay Magazine “Ask
Margaret” column, and wondered if anyone else has too?
K.R., Palm Harbor
I have not only been hearing about recent postcard exchanges; I have been the
lucky recipient of many cards from throughout the country. They have arrived from
St. Augustine, Florida; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; New Orleans, Louisiana;
Washington, D.C.; Hershey, Pennsylvania; Squaw Lake, Minnesota; Santa Fe, New
Mexico; Portland, Oregon; plus Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, Sequoia
National Park in California and other interesting destinations. The thoughtful
handwritten messages they include are especially meaningful and very much
appreciated.
I’ve even received postcards that were originally sent to me when I was young
enough for them to have been mailed with 2-cent stamps. I had returned them to their
even younger sender years ago, so that she would have pictorial reminders of her
family’s travels. Her painstakingly, handprinted well wishes with their charmingly
creative spelling and punctuation brought back long-forgotten memories.
I truly appreciate both the new and the vintage postcards that so many of you have
taken the effort to share with me. Thank you.

The recycled and new postcards I’ve been receiving
since my May/June 2017 “Ask Margaret” article are
nostalgic, interesting and fun. Thanks for the memories.
