The Taste of Florida
Florida Sweets
Joy Sheffield Harris attended Florida State
University and eventually met her husband
Jack, Tampa Bay’s popular radio voice, while
she was a marketing specialist for the state of
Florida, promoting Florida produce on television.
Together, they wrote Easy Breezy Florida Cooking in
2010. Then Joy wrote A Culinary History of Florida in
2014. In this new book, which is not a cookbook but
more of an overview of sweets throughout the state,
Joy reveals Florida’s well-known sweets such as Key
lime pie and citrus candy. We owe these treats to the
Spanish explorers who brought the citrus industry
to Florida. This historical retrospective of desserts in
the Sunshine State is full of photographs and contains
recollections of Joy driving around the state with Jack
and their son Jackson, looking for something sweet
to eat. From Mixon Fruit Farms in Bradenton to the
relatively new William Dean Chocolates in Belleair
Bluffs, Joy covers the sweets available in the state
of Florida. She includes the history of festivals that celebrate our local fruits and
berries. She is sure to bring back memories of former times, as she relates them to
today’s pleasures.

George Lizotte’s words.
Pioneer Days on Tampa Bay’s Gulf Beaches was
written by George Lizotte, who was one of the
pioneers of Pass-a-Grille during the 1890s. The
book contains a series of articles that he wrote
for Gulf Beach News in 1941. Local historic writer R.
Wayne Ayers has reorganized these writings and taken
other editorial liberties, but has left Lizotte’s journalistic
style intact. This is a fascinating read, particularly for
those who know the areas described in the book as
they are today. The history of these barrier islands, as
described one hundred years ago, is much different
than what you might have thought. In the early days,
it was Tarpon fishing that brought many visitors to
this relatively remote, somewhat barren area. Lizotte
speaks with authority, presenting a firsthand account
of a time that was so different from modern day.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Pioneer Days on Tampa Bay’s Gulf
Beaches is published by the University of Tampa Press
and is available from online booksellers and at local venues.
