As the Beatles’ legacy continues to thrive worldwide,
there are countless numbers of Beatles fans both young
and old who can now add to their knowledge of this group
by visiting the new Penny Lane Beatles museum that is
located in Stirling Art Studios & Gallery at 730 Broadway in
Dunedin. The collection contains many extremely rare and
highly unusual mementos that range from signed guitars
to strands of the Beatles’ hair. All types of things such as
Yellow Submarine paraphernalia to Beatles puppets and
pins are on display for all to enjoy.
This exhibit of eclectic memorabilia is curated by Colin
Bissett who grew up in Liverpool, where the Beatles began
their career. Colin remembers seeing them perform live at
the Cavern Club and the Casbah Coffee Club in the early
1960s before they became a worldwide sensation.
In addition to the Penny Lane collection, Stirling Art
Studios & Gallery contains 10 working studios with 14 artists,
plus a spacious gallery. The artists at Stirling are Vivian
Ruegger, Brooke Allison, Chris Fredrick, Bette Saiberlich,
Laura Vincenti, Len Vincenti, Karen Baker, Polly Berlin,
Margaret Modjeski, Wendy Davis, Janice Ritter Kadushin,
Nancy Ping, Candy Schultheis and Lorraine Potocki. These
artists work in a wide variety of media from oils to acrylics,
pastels to watercolors and sculptures to jewelry design. By
visiting Stirling Art Studios, you will have an opportunity
to see these artists at work and purchase art directly from
them.
On the Second Friday of each month from 5:30 p.m. to
8 p.m., the gallery holds a complimentary reception to
showcase its changing exhibits. The studio and gallery that
are located above Rosie’s Tavern on the second floor are
accessed from the back of the building, where there is free
parking available. 9
