PIN CUSHION
FILLERS
GROUND WALNUT SHELLS
A favorite of many crafters, ground walnut shells
give a pin cushion a solid feel with some fine
crunch. Walnut shells are sold in pet stores or
many quilt shops - just be mindful of potential
nut allergies.

STEEL WOOL
Easily found in the paint or cleaning section
of your local store, steel wool fibers serve as
a weight for the cushion. It is also great for
sharpening pins and needles. Just make sure to
use the plain variety with no added detergents.
SAWDUST
Obtainable from most hardware stores, sawdust
is a lightweight filler. When packed into your pin
cushion, sawdust gives an almost bouncy feel
that can be manipulated into corners.
WOOL
The lanolin contained in natural wool helps to
keep pins and needles slightly oiled to prevent
rusting. Wool gives a fluffy feel but can be
compacted to give more depth and weight.

Stuffing with polyfill gives a lightweight and fluffy
feel to a pin cushion. Since most who sew have
a bag of poly-fil in their craft room, this makes a
quick and easy solution.
