When pressing blocks that contain materials that can melt, such
as the glitter vinyl we used, be sure to take a scrap piece of fabric
such as muslin and cover the seams before pressing.
For blocks containing materials like the navy velvet seen here,
be sure to lay a scrap piece of velvet facing the appliqués for
pressing to avoid crushing the velvet’s pile.
O P
Once stitched together, butterfly press the back seams open with
a steam iron. Repeat steps K - L until all sections of the tile scene
have been sewn together.
We will now add the backing. Place the back fabric right side
down and place your tile scene on top, design side up. Your
back fabric should be cut large enough to leave a minimum of 2”
extending past the quilt top on all sides.
Q R
Using temporary spray adhesive, or quilter’s pins, secure the tile
scene to the backing.
Beginning with the innermost seams, stitch in the ditch along the
vertical and horizontal connecting seams. TIP: Remember, if any
added 3D elements are close to your walking foot, be sure to
secure them out of the way!
