My Clearwater
Greenies - A Group with a Mission!
In early 2016, Brian Bigler noticed an event in the
“Things to Do” section of the Tampa Bay Times.
The event’s organizer was looking for volunteers
to join a new program that strived to keep the city
waterways clean from debris and trash. Specifically, the
program was looking for people with kayaks who were
64 MyClearwater
interested in doing clean-ups
once a month with rotating
locations around the city.
According to Bigler, "The
Clearwater Greenies take litter
and the opportunity to get out
on their boats, very seriously.
They continue to meet and share
fellowship the first Saturday of
each month and are looking
for new members who not only
share their concern but enjoy
getting on the water."
Apart from the variety
of trash the Greenies
pick up, they often find a
few surprises. Members have
found bicycles, shopping carts,
luggage, toys and the occasional fishing
rod. All supplies for the waterway cleanups are provided by
the city of Clearwater’s Parks & Recreation Department.
The group is often stopped by park users who express their
appreciation and gratitude for the efforts. "Our members
regularly marvel at the improved appearance of our parks,
following our efforts," said Bigler.
The Clearwater Greenies are looking for new members.
Anyone who is interested in serving can contact the city’s
Parks & Recreation volunteer program coordinator at
