TAMPA’S AGAM
FOUNTAIN
Photography by Gram
This kinetic “fire and water” sculpture by Israeli artist Yaacov Agam
once stood in front of the Tampa Convention Center. Operated by a
computer, its lights changed as water and fire shot out of the six-ton
fountain while it revolved. Almost 10 feet tall and 14 feet in diameter, it
was named Shamayim, the Hebrew word for heaven. Installed in 1990, it was
dedicated in 1992. As costs to repair it escalated, it was eventually returned
to its donor. However, the City of Tampa still maintains an Agam sculpture
that it commissioned.
