Get in touch with your creative side for a fun twist on
the Flower Shop project. Stitch a few of your favorite
flowers from the collection out, then grab a canvas
and some paint and get started!
When planning your project, you want to keep a
few things in mind. First, decide on the size of your
canvas. Since the flowers from Flower Shop are
only one size, you’ll want to stay away from large
canvases because you’ll have too much space and
the flowers will be too small comparatively. The
canvases we chose for our project were 6” squares,
so they were the perfect size for grouping three or
four flowers together on a canvas.
The next thing you want to think about is your
color palette. Our flowers were full of vibrant and
eye catching colors, so the paint we chose for our
canvas needed to be slightly toned down, so the
flowers still stood out. You can pick multiple colors,
or stick with one to create a tonal backdrop similar
to ours. You also want to plan out what you’ll actually
be painting. You can make it one solid color, or you
can paint a subtle abstract or textured pattern. Think
of paintings by van Gogh or Monet that are mostly
brushstrokes of color that create patterns. Just avoid
crazy patterns that might be too distracting from the
flowers in the foreground.
The last thing to think about is the composition
of your flowers. You don’t want to combine too
many flowers on one canvas and end up making
some kind of floral blob that is hard to look at. Try
laying out only three or four flowers at a time, and
mess around with their orientations and proximity
to figure out what composition you like best. Snap
pictures with your phone as you go to compare your
compositions and decide what you like best!
