Augmented Reality Tour Comes to Downtown
An exciting new partnership between the city of
Clearwater and the University of South Florida
has created a new virtual experience for art lovers,
bringing one of the city’s popular downtown
murals to life.
The city of Clearwater’s Community Redevelopment
Agency (CRA) has partnered with USF’s Access 3D Lab
and Advanced Visualization Center to launch a new project
called “Paint the Town! A Journey Inside Clearwater’s
Murals with Mixed Reality,” bringing a new way to view the
Comunidad mural, located at 28 N. Garden Ave., in the
heart of downtown.
Using advanced 3D digital technologies to bring the mural
and its stories to life, a new app created by USF offers an
augmented reality tour of the mural. The public can embark
on a self-guided journey inside the mural, using a virtual
reality headset or a smartphone.

With these advanced technologies, users hear and see a story
that celebrates cultural diversity and depicts a network of
empowered, united women who form a vibrant community.
This augmented reality project is a first not just for
Clearwater, but for the region.
“Downtown Clearwater is emerging as a vibrant arts and
culture hub. This partnership with USF’s Access 3D Lab
provides an innovative, exciting way to further engage our
residents and visitors in the arts through technology,” said
Rosemary D’Amour, CRA Public Relations Manager.
