My Clearwater
City Helps to Make Flood Insurance More Affordable
Summer 55
If you are a current or aspiring property owner, it is a
good idea to check out the possible flood hazards of your
property before you buy. Most homeowner’s insurance
policies do not cover flood damage. Whether you are
required to buy flood insurance or if it is optional, you
may want to have a policy in place. Talk to your insurance
provider about whether a flood insurance policy is right for
you or if additional coverage is needed.
The city of Clearwater participates in the National Flood
Insurance Program, or NFIP, which helps provide a means
for property owners to financially protect themselves if
coverage is required. The NFIP offers flood insurance
to homeowners, renters and business owners if their
community participates in the program, which Clearwater
does. Visit www.FloodSmart.gov to find out how much
flooding could cost you, estimate your premium, and learn
more about flood insurance.
Flood Zones & Evacuation Zones
are Different
Flood zones and evacuation zones are different. Flood
zones are used for assessing a property’s flood risk, which
can be caused by heavy rains, tropical storms or hurricanes.
Evacuation zones are based on a property’s vulnerability to
storm surge from a hurricane.
To find out your flood zone, visit myclearwater.com/
flooding, and look at a flood map. You also can go to
myclearwater.com, and select “Engineering” from the list of
city departments. Click on “Floodplain Management,” and
select links for flood maps, elevation certificates, or a floodzone
lookup.
To find out your evacuation zone in the time of a tropical
storm or hurricane, go to pinellascounty.org/emergency/
knowyourzone.htm or to the interactive map at
floodmaps.pinellascounty.org.
City Offers Flood Protection
Assistance
Hurricane season and the summer rainy season are here.
Tropical storms, hurricanes and seasonal rains can flood
homes with heavy rains that accompany such storms. Protect
your property by elevating your appliances. For example,
you can raise a water heater or air conditioning unit up off
the ground and implementing flood-proofing techniques.
The city of Clearwater’s Stormwater Engineering staff
provides site visits, one-on-one consultations and advice to
homeowners about property protection measures, such as
retrofitting and drainage improvements.
Call 562-4750 for a city of Clearwater property protection
consultation or site visit to evaluate drainage or retrofitting
options.
