Tampa Bay History Center Presents:
U.S.S. Tampa – Pageantry,
Protection & Patriotism on Zoom
In 1918, during W.W.I, the U.S. Navy
suffered its worst disaster when the
U.S.S Tampa (named after the city)
was sunk by a German U-Boat in the
English Channel. Everyone was killed,
including 24 boys from Tampa. Prior
to the war and after the Titanic tragedy,
the ship was a Coast Guard Cutter
protecting vessels from floating icebergs
in the North Atlantic. The heroic story
of the U.S.S. Tampa can be viewed on
a beautiful mural, which is made of
more than 200,000 pieces of glass, at
the Tampa Bay History Center.
