Ruth’s Chris Celebrates 50 Years
In 1965, Ruth Fertel, a
divorced mother of two boys,
was working as a lab technician
at Tulane University School
of Medicine, when she saw a
“Steakhouse for Sale” ad.
Driven by her spirit, she
mortgaged her home and
bought Chris’ Steak House
on the corner of Broad and
Ursulines in New Orleans.
After the restaurant was
devastated by a fire, she
reopened at a new location and
added her name to the former
name. Today, 50 years later,
there are 145 Ruth’s Chris
Steak Houses worldwide.
