How can I protect myself
from Medical Malpractice?
Jeffrey “Jack” Gordon, the managing partner of the Floridabased
law firm Maney|Gordon should know. Named as one of the
state’s Top 100 Super Lawyers honorees in 2013 and 2014, and
to the Super Lawyers list again in 2015, this skilled trial attorney
has dedicated his practice to holding hospitals and physicians
accountable for medical errors.
BE INFORMED—Patients should do research to understand their
health conditions and document their symptoms. They should
ask health-care providers a written list of questions
they feel are important, and not merely expect—but
demand—full and complete answers.
SHOP AROUND—Don’t be afraid to get a
second opinion; and never be reluctant to
find a new doctor if you don’t feel that you’re
receiving proper medical care. Your health
is too important to place in the hands
of a provider who hasn’t earned your
confidence, isn’t answering questions
or isn’t giving you—or your condition—
adequate time and attention.
“Don’t allow yourself to be intimidated
by the medical system. Speak up and
advocate for your own well-being. If
you, as a patient, sense that something
is wrong, communicate it to your
health-care providers. Although it’s
important to trust your doctor or
nurse, it’s just as important to listen
to your body, use common sense
and be proactive,” Gordon says.
