Largo Lions Club Spotlight Series
The Largo Lions Club’s 21st
Annual Spotlight Series of four
concerts, held at the Central Park
Performing Arts Center in Largo,
were well-attended afternoons and
evenings of nostalgic music and
fun for a good cause. The Fabulous
Hubcaps, Neil Zirconia, known as
the Ultimate Faux Diamond, the
Mark Anthony Band performing the
hits of piano man Billy Joel and Bob
Seger, plus Bertie Higgins, who got
his start and has family in the Tampa
Bay area, and his Band of Pirates,
performed two rousing shows each.
This year’s performances supported
Southeast Guide Dogs and other
Lions Club vision-related causes.
During the Pinellas Community
Foundation’s “Hungry for Your
Attention” annual lunch meeting at
the Hilton St. Petersburg Carillon, donors
and community partners learned that
52 percent of Pinellas County’s school
children are receiving free or reduced
price lunches. The foundation, which
is celebrating its 48th year of making a
difference in Pinellas residents’ quality
of life, also called upon Creative Clay,
Community Preschool and the St.
Petersburg Free Clinic to learn about their
commitment to fight hunger. American
Stage Theatre provided entertainment.
Clearwater Jazz
Holiday Foundation
Clearwater Jazz Holiday, in addition
to presenting an annual world-class
live music festival, collaborates with
Ruth Eckerd Hall’s renowned youth
jazz program to develop and encourage
young jazz musicians. About five to eight
high school juniors and seniors annually
participate in the Youth Jazz Combo to gain
performance experiences and exposure
through this partnership. The outreach
program brings music to schools, engaging
students with the culture, history and
sound of live jazz music. To learn more
