BACKING & BINDING
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Start by using a temporary fixative to affix the back
fabric to the quilt.
TIP: You may also use pins to hold the quilt back to
your quilt top.
Use a rotary cutter and ruler to trim away the excess
back fabric.
Backing and binding is almost as important as piecing
the quilt top! Proper backing and binding makes a big
difference in the overall look of the quilt. Make sure the
back fabric is at least 2” larger than the quilt top on all
4 sides.
Starting from the middle, begin sewing the backing to
the quilt top using the stitch in the ditch method.
TIP: Use clear or matching thread to best hide these
stitches.
To make binding strips, cross cut (or cut selvage
to selvage) 2.5” fabric strips. For our A-size quilt,
including borders, we need to make binding that is
216” long.
