HEALTHCARE RESOURCES
The resources in this section will provide you with places to seek
financial assistance in paying bills or affording services. There
are also more resources in the rest of this journal. We do our
best to let you know about eligibility for, and availability of, the
resources across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Should you
need a resource not mentioned in this book or find that we have
incorrectly listed a resource, please call BIAK, toll free at 1-800-
592-1117 and let us know. We will correct the error on our web
site and make sure the correction is reflected in the next journal.
RESOURCES FOR MEDICAL EXPENSES
Money is the last thing on your mind when a member of
your family has a brain injury. During the critical phase of
hospitalization, you cannot be legally refused life-saving medical
treatment regardless of your ability to pay. Should you feel
pressure from someone regarding medical bills, tell them you
have more important things to worry about. Hospitals take into
account that they will treat some patients with no ability to pay
for services when they set their rates.
Each hospital has a staff of social workers who will work with
you to help you with the medical expenses. They may ask you
some questions about what resources that you may have; here are
some of the most common resources:
• Medical insurance. Most medical insurance policies will
pay for the majority of expenses for acute hospitalization
and for some rehabilitation after the patient is discharged
from the hospital. Typically, after you pay your co-payments
and deductibles, the insurance company will cover the rest
of the expenses. If you have a health insurance policy, please
contact them and ask to have a case manager appointed to
help oversee your family member’s case. In many cases, the
case manager and medical staff will help you advocate for
services if the insurance company initially denies it.
• Automobile Insurance. If the injury is the result of a motor
vehicle accident (MVA) there may be coverage for personal
injury protection (PIP) on either your policy or the policy
of the driver. If the at-fault driver is not covered, or is not
sufficiently insured, your own automobile insurance policy
often has a un/under insured motorist policy included.
• Workers Compensation. If your family member was
injured while at work, they may be covered under the
company’s workers compensation coverage. If this is the
case, be sure to contact your family member’s employer for
more details. In this case, you may need the services of an
advocate or an attorney.
• Personal Injury Actions. If the injury was caused by
someone else’s negligence, the person’s home owner’s
insurance may cover costs, or you may need to seek an
attorney to file a claim seeking reimbursement for medical
expenses and lost wages due. See the legal section on page 50
for more details.
• Veterans Administration. If you have served in active
military duty either in the Army, Navy, Air Force,
Marines or Coast Guard, you and your dependents may
be eligible for a wide range of benefits provided by the
Veterans Administration. To learn more, call the Veterans
Administration, toll free, at 1-800-827-1000.
• TRICARE. This is the health insurance program serving
uniformed Service Members, retirees and their families. For
questions in Kentucky, call them toll free at 1-800-444-5445.
• Crime Victims Compensation Board. This program is
operated by the Commonwealth of Kentucky and more
information on this program is found on page 29 of the
Federal and State Programs section of this journal.
