Once it is trimmed correctly, your trivet should look
something like this.

should look like at this point.
With right side facing down, create your binding’s starting
point by aligning it’s raw edge with the quilt block’s seam
allowance. Then fold the binding into a triangle. Pin or clip
in place.

Sew along the quilt block’s tacking stitch until you reach the
corner. Once you reach the corner, put your needle down
and pivot the fabric 45˚ toward the corner’s seam allowance,
and continue stitching off the corner of the quilt block.
Remove the design from the sewing machine and fold the
binding strip back against the 45˚ line you stitched onto the
corner’s seam allowance.
