When I moved away to College in June 1985, I packed
up the stuff I needed and left the rest “home.” Hotel Hell
was “home” and Gainesville seemed temporary. Once
while my parents were out of town my brother called
and told me he had to pack up all the stuff out of my
room because the “landlord” had rented out my room
to some guy. Never mind the rent was paid and all my
stuff was still in it ... I had to rent a car and come home
for the weekend from school and get all of my earthy
possessions -- that didn’t quite take up the whole
trunk! I didn’t have much, but what I did meant something
to me. I was horrifi ed that I might fi nd the guys
running around in my prom or homecoming clothes
in a stupor... I did fi nd the “landlord” on the beach
and give him a few choice words.
That’s the point that I knew I was really on my
own and my home wasn’t at Hotel Hell anymore. It
was one of the saddest feelings realizing that.
Now I live a world away with central heat and air, no pet roaches
and lots of other amenities ... and I can appreciate every one of them now!
